The contemporary Jesuit mission is the service of faith
and the promotion in society of
“that justice of the Gospel
which is the embodiment of God’s love and saving mercy.
General Congregation 34, Servants of Christ’s Mission
Social Ministries encompass a wide variety of initiatives undertaken by individual Jesuits, apostolates and the Missouri Province. Together we promote "that justice of the Gospel" through local, regional and national efforts. We serve as a catalyst for "God’s love and saving mercy" through our schools, parishes, retreat houses, and volunteer programs. Grounded in our experience of ministry we advocate for the implementation of just structures and social policies ad majorem dei gloriam.
Jesuits of the Missouri Province innovatively promote the good news of Christ's mercy and justice in all their works. In collaboration with Jesuit provinces throughout the United States and Canada the Missouri Province sits on the Jesuit Commission on Social and International Ministries (JCSIM) and the National Jesuit Committee on Investment Responsibility (NJCIR).
Jesuit Commission on Social and International Ministries
The Jesuits of the United States and Canada collaborate in their efforts on behalf of justice and on particular advocacy issues through the Jesuit Commission on Social and International Ministries (JCSIM). The commission consists of provincial representatives along with staff members from the Office of Social and International Ministries at the Jesuit Conference. JCSIM serves in an advisory capacity for the provincials of the United States, and strives to focus the resources and advocacy efforts of Jesuit apostolates toward the US Provincials' social priorities: 1) immigration, 2) war and violence, 3) poverty and HIV in Africa, and 4) domestic poverty (low income housing).
National Jesuit Committee on Investment Responsibility
NJCIR consists of provincial representatives from the United States and English Canada. The committee recommends strategic shareholder investments so the provinces can engaging companies in dialogue on issues pertaining to human rights and health care. NJCIR serves in an advisory capacity for the provincials regarding practices and policies related to socially responsible investing.
